I mean, hopefully you actually get some writing done. But, in those moments where you most want t procrastinate and not write, just make a deal with yourself. You don’t have to write—but you can’t do anything else.
Sit in front of your computer, and read what you wrote the previous day.
And then, if you’re like me, you may have to get up and pace the room thinking.
But you can’t do anything else.
A lot of the time (though admittedly not all the time, that’s all it takes for me.
I just make myself sit there and read what I wrote before. And then within a few minutes, I can usually start writing. Something comes up. A way forward, an idea. Maybe it isn’t fully formed yet. Maybe it takes a half hour, or even a full day before it’s really as good as I want it to be.
But it all starts with that one simple act. Sit in front of the computer, read your previous writing, and then don’t let yourself do anything else except write.
Writing isn’t easy, but the more you do it the easier it gets. And the more you just sit down in front of that computer, the more you’ll write.
What are you waiting for? Stop reading this, put the phone down, and starting making magic happen.
